One thing that many adults with the disease wonder about is whether alcohol and diabetes is compatible. How does alcohol affect the body and can a diabetic consume alcohol like someone that doesn’t have the disease. This article will cover these issues.

In reality, there is no problem having the odd alcoholic drink from time to time if you are diabetic. However consuming alcohol is akin to taking in empty calories. So for anyone about to drink alcohol, a small snack should be taken beforehand. This is particular relevant to diabetics and they should try to keep their blood sugar levels as stable as possible. A snack will cause the liver to create glucose and put it into the bloodstream before alcohol enters the body. If you take any diabetes pills then you shouldn’t drink for a few hours after or as the prescription advises.

Avoid drinking excessively. Apart from the negative affects that alcohol can have on your body, it will make it harder for you to keep a constant blood sugar level. Keeping your blood sugar level constant is important over time because it decreases the chances of diabetic complications, like poor circulation, nerve damage and cardiovascular problems occurring.

Having a glass or two of wine with dinner is perfectly ok. Drinking alcohol as part of a celebration is also fine. As you become more experienced with diabetes you will know when you have taken on too much alcohol.

For about 2 months now, we’ve been using the Prologue2 theme for WordPress as an internal Twitter- (i.e. Yammer) and Campfire-like communication method. Why? Well, the team was working slightly different hours (so Skype not always an option and sometimes too demanding & in-your-face) and e-mail became too much.

We still needed to keep up to date with what the team was working on at any given stage though. So Prologue2 was our solution. (Preferred over Yammer or Campfire, because it’s awesome and it’s free.)

We found a solution in Prologue which added a posting box to the home page and gave it a Twitter-like feel. Now Automattic had a pulse, a place where the incredible amount of activity was chronicled and captured. It was low-friction and hassle-free, we all started using it more.

It completely transformed how Automattic works internally and I think is one of the most valuable things we’ve adopted in the past year.

Suffice to say, I think the whole WooTeam would agree with me when I say that P2 has changed the way we communicate as well. We currently average almost 30 updates (or comments) / weekday since we started using P2 and those updates generally relate to what we’re doing at that moment, sharing a link or asking a question. And all of this in real-time.

Here’s how it’s changed our communications:

• Less e-mail which is CC’ed to the whole team;
• Less Skype conversations (and talking rubbish);
• We’re more up-to-date with what everyone on the team is doing;
• P2’s mobile-friendly version, means we stay up to date wherever we are; and
• We still have a record of all communications.
